Men's Lacrosse competes at #1 Limestone

Gaffney, S.C. – The Catawba College Men's Lacrosse team (6-7, 3-5 SAC) would be defeated in a road matchup against the No. 1 ranked Limestone Saints (13-0, 7-0) at Saints Field on Saturday, with Limestone jumping out to an early lead and weathering Catawba the rest of the way 

 

TEAM STATS 

- Limestone outshot Catawba 62-29, putting 38 attempts on goal compared to 14 for Catawba  

- The Saints won 29-32 faceoffs 

- Catawba would turn the ball over 21 times, with Limestone ceding possession 20 times themselves. 

- Ground balls would be 58-25, Limestone  

- In goal for Catawba, James Crighton would produce 18 saves over 52:29 minutes of action, with Brady Gauntneralso seeing 7:31 of action. Crighton took the loss, dropping to 6-7 on the season 

- For Limestone, Shane O'Leary (30:00, three saves), Nolan Hayes (27:06, four saves), Chris Santacroce (0:41), and Colin Selters (2:13) combined for the winning effort. O'Leary would be awarded the win, now 13-0 on the year 

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS 

 - Frank Cetrone led Catawba offensively, netting three goals on the day. Bakari Neely, Hunter Clarke, Tyler Wedick, and Jordan Dashall found the back of the net as well 

- Peyton Turner led all players with three assists 

- Cetrone led Catawba with nine shots, putting six on goal. Neely would attempt four shots, with two coming on target 

- Crighton recovered five ground balls, with Peyton Leonard tallying four. Jack Butler and Kyle Chessock corralled three each as well 

- Leonard led Catawba with a pair of caused turnovers, with seven other players causing one each  

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

FIRST QUARTER 

- It took just :06 seconds for the opening goal, scored by Limestone's Tim Ladner to spark a 4-0 Saints run. Zachary Terry struck at 12:05, followed by Carter Brand notching a pair of goals himself at 8:36 and 7:26 

- Dash put Catawba on the board at 5:30 

- However, the Saints had another offensive run in them to close out the first quarter. Blake Maracle led with a goal at the 3:58 mark, followed by four straight Limestone goals while up a man on offense. Zachary Terry made it 6-1 with a goal :17 seconds after Maracle's tally, followed by Austin Lamoureux :19 seconds later  

- Jason Thomfohrde scored Limestone's fourth goal in :40 seconds at the 3:01 mark, making it 8-1 

- Cetrone tallied his first goal of the afternoon with :23 seconds to go before the first intermission 

 

SECOND QUARTER 

- Limestone struck quickly again out of the break, as Jason Madden scored the first goal of the second frame :14 seconds in  

- Matthew Burt and Thomfohrde struck within :41 seconds of each other at 9:36 and 8:55, making it 11-2 to the home side 

Neely scored Catawba's first goal of the quarter at the 7:28 mark, answered by Michael McGarry a minute later 

- Cetrone's second goal came with 4:47 on the board 

- Terry scored the final two goals of the half at 2:27 and 1:40, sending Limestone into the break up 14-4 

 

THIRD QUARTER 

- Clarke opened the second half, striking at the 13:31 mark 

- The Saints would proceed to rip off another five goal run, spurred on by Burt, Terry, and Chris Erneston IV. Erneston IV's goal with 5:29 on the clock would put Limestone up 19-5 heading into the final quarter 

 

FOURTH QUARTER 

- Catawba scored first once again in the fourth frame, as Wedick found the back of the net with 11:34 to go 

- Titus Chapman and Michael Marinello scored :41 seconds apart for Limestone, at 7:31 and 6:50 

- Cetrone completed his hat-trick at the 2:08 mark, off of Turner's third assist of the day 

 

NOTES 

- Cetrone's hat-trick was his fourth of the season, while this was Turner's third game this season with at least three assists. The pair are tied for the team lead in points, with 36  

- Neely's goal, his 10th of the season, made him the seventh Catawba player to hit double-figures this season  

- Dash's goal was his ninth over the last five games, while Wedick's tally was his fourth over the last five
