Field Hockey Falls to Queens (N.C.) in Home Opener

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker University field hockey fell to Queens (N.C.) in its home opener on Friday (Mar. 19) by a score of 4-3.

Emily Sponaugle got the scoring started 49 seconds in off an assist from Britt Kabo, before Queens tied the game halfway through the first quarter. The teams went to the second quarter tied at one apiece.

The Royals took a 2-1 lead with under six minutes left in the second quarter, before taking that lead to the half.

Queens increased its lead to 3-1 three minutes into the third quarter, taking their lead to the latter part of the period. Goals 59 seconds apart from Kelsey Sithole (assisted by Kabo) and Rylie Cordrey tied the game at three with six minutes to go in the quarter, before the teams would eventually head to the fourth deadlocked.

The Royals would net the game winner halfway through the fourth quarter, before fighting off any Coker chances in the last few minutes to take the victory.

Sithole, Cordrey and Sponaugle scored in the game for Coker, while Kabo dished out two assists in the game. Coker earned five penalty corners in the game. Kayla Hnasko (1-1) made five saves between the pipes for Coker in the game.

The Cobras (1-1, 1-1 SACC) return to action on Sunday (Mar. 21) at Converse in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action. The game begins at 2:00 p.m., with live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
