Women's Lacrosse celebrated Senior Day vs UVA Wise

Salisbury, N.C. – The Catawba College Women's Lacrosse team (3-12, 2-7 SAC) fell on Saturday in a Senior Day matchup  as they honored Evie Kaserud and Lauren Swallow against the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers (8-7, 5-4) on Saturday, rallying from an early deficit but being unable to pull out the win at Shuford Stadium  

 

TEAM STATS 

- UVA-Wise led offensively with 34 shots, putting 27 on goal while Catawba put 17 on target  

- Draw controls favored the Cavaliers, 19-11 

- Turnovers were close, as Catawba ceded possession 25 times and UVA-Wise turned the ball over on 22 occasions 

- Ground balls also favored the Cavaliers, as they recovered 28 to Catawba's 22 

- In goal for Catawba, Kaserud made 11 stops over all 60 minutes while Olivia Toomer (45:00, six saves) and Addie Donalson (15:00) backstopped the win for UVA-Wise 

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS 

 - Helena Cronemiller, Sarah Maier, Charlie Skepple, and Madison Shafferall scored a pair of goals to lead the Catawba side. Maier's six shots were a team-high  

- Maier, Skepple, and Jenna Hirvonen all notched an assist  

- Abby Shurenand Kaserud both recovered five ground balls to lead Catawba, while Rebecca Salber retrieved three  

- Shuren also caused a trio of turnovers, followed by Shaffer and Audrey Adelsberger with two each  

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

FIRST QUARTER 

- UVA-Wise opened the scoring in just :16 seconds thanks to Mallory Trimble, whose goal was answered by Maier at the 12:05 mark  

- Abby Stoffelen put the Cavaliers on top again at 10:47, only for Catawba to once again answer as Cronemiller capped off a pass from Skepple to make it 2-2 at 7:48 

- Shaffer gave Catawba the lead for the first time 1:10 later, until Trimble's second tied the game at 3-3 with 4:13 on the clock 

- A 3-0 run over the final 1:21 in the first quarter sent the Cavaliers into the first break up 6-3, as each of Noley Miller, Grace Golatt, and Alexis Hilstrom scored 

 

SECOND QUARTER 

- Golatt's second opened the scoring in the second frame at 11:11, followed by a pair of goals :31 seconds apart from Hiller and Trimble. Hiller's third at 4:54 made it 10-3, Cavaliers 

- Catawba wouldn't go away, as Mary Sorvillo cut the lead to six with 1:43 left before the half and Skepple added another for Catawba with just :07 seconds left 

 

THIRD QUARTER 

- Catawba's two goals to close out the first half turned into a 5-0 run over the start of the second 30 minutes, with Hirvonen opening the third quarter scoring at 10:41. Cronemiller and Skepple added their second goals of the game at 7:30 and 3:57 respectively, as the home side stormed back to cut the lead to 10-8 

- Two goals from Stoffelen at 3:23 and :50 gave Wise a four-point lead once again, though Shaffer's second Catawba goal of the afternoon reduced to three once again just :28 seconds before the final intermission 

 

FOURTH QUARTER 

- A scoreless opening six minutes gave way to a pair of UVA-Wise goals just :10 seconds apart from Hiller and Golatt that made it 14-9 to the visiting side 

- Maier's second goal of the game would be answered by one from Logen Davis. Stoffelen and Shuren traded goals in the final 3:22 

 

NOTES 

- Both Maier and Cronemiller reached the 20-point mark this season, becoming the third and fourth players to do it after Shuren and Ella McCusker 

- For Maier, this was her seventh game this season with two goals and her third straight  

- For Cronemiller, this was her fourth game this season with a pair of goals and her second straight  

- Skepple's brace put her into double-figures this season, as she now has 11 goals thanks to a pair of back-to-back doubles  

- Shaffer's two-goal outing was the second of her career and first this season

- The Catawba College Women's Lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday, April 17th, welcoming the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears to Salisbury for the regular-season finale at Shuford Stadium. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
