Cobras Hold off Newberry for Sunday Conference Win

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Coker University field hockey team held off Newberry for a 4-3 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas victory on Sunday (Sept. 19). The victory marks the first of Morgan Downey's Coker career.

The Cobras took a 1-0 lead two minutes in when Victoria Humphreys scored unassisted, before Britt Kabo scored unassisted at the halfway point of the frame to put Coker ahead 2-0. Newberry would cut the lead in half late in the first quarter, as Coker took its 2-1 lead to the second quarter. After no scoring in the second, Coker led 2-1 at the half.

Newberry tied the game with a goal two and a half minutes into the third, before Chase Lennon scored from Kabo 36 seconds later to re-gain the lead for Coker. The Wolves would tie things up yet again just 1:17 later, before Indy Echteld netted her first career goal as the eventual game winner with three minutes to play in the third. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, as the Cobras earned the conference victory on the road.

Four different Cobras scored in the victory, while Kabo netted the lone assist for Coker in the game. Lennon led the Cobras with three shots, while Echteld had two and Humphreys and Kabo each had one. Kelsey Gibbons made eight saves between the pipes in the win.

The Cobras return to action on Saturday (Sept. 25) at Mount Olive in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action. The action is set for a 1:00 p.m. start from Mount Olive, N.C., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
