Softball picks up second straight SAC sweep at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Catawba picked up its second-straight sweep of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Jimmy Martin Field. The Catawba Indians claimed wins over host Limestone of 12-4 and 8-7, in eight innings, to improve to 21-13 overall and 9-7 in the SAC. The Saints fall to 20-16 and 9-7.

Catawba used an eight-run fourth to win the opener in six innings. A Kary Hales single and a Bri Gallagher sacrifice fly put Catawba on top 2-0 in the first. Gallagher started the big fourth frame with a home run and Savanna Balderston added a two-run single to make it 5-1. Hales would add a two-run single and Gallagher a two-run double for a 10-1 bulge.

That was plenty of support for Alexandra Baquie, who improved to 14-5 with the complete-game win. She allowed just one earned run off four hits with five strikeouts. Gallagher went 3-for-3 with five RBI. Hales had two hits and three RBI. Faith Callaway had a three-run homer for Limestone.

Catawba rallied in game two to secure the sweep. Limestone had jumped on top 5-4 after a three-run homer by Abigail Price with two outs in the sixth. Catawba responded in the seventh as Hales reached on an error leading off the inning and went to third on a single by Gallagher. After an out, Hales scored on a fielder's choice by Elizabeth Parrish. Balderston gave Catawba a 6-5 lead with a two-out single.

Limestone tied the game as Price led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run. Baquie got the final two outs with the winning run at second to send the game to extra innings.

With Carlee Carter on second to start the eighth, Christina Brendle connected on a home run and an 8-6 Catawba lead. Limestone closed within a run as the Saints scored their tie-breaker run on a sacrifice fly by Price. Limestone put two on with two outs, but Baquie got a pop up to end the game.

Balderston led Catawba at the plate in game two with three hits and two RBI. Brendle had two hits and three RBI, while Riley Tucker also collected two hits. Baquie (15-5) claimed the win in relief. Price had two hits and five RBI in the loss for Limestone.

Catawba is at home on Thursday, hosting Newberry for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The game was moved up one day due to potential weather issues.
