Catawba Falls In SAC Semifinal After Late Goal By Wingate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The #20 Catawba College women's soccer team was defeated by the Wingate Bulldogs in the South Atlantic Conference semifinals after the Bulldogs scored the lone goal of the game in the 84th minute on Friday night.

Catawba outshot Wingate 17-3 in the contest and held possession for most of the game, but the Bulldogs were able to deliver the game-winning goal off of their only coner kick of the night.

In the 84th minute, the Bulldogs were awarded a corner kick for the first time all game, and Caroline Peters sent in an outward swinging ball into the box. The ball was jarred loose towards the left side of the 18-yard line by Yasmine Cowley, and Sascha Larson was all alone to rip her shot into the back of the net.

Catawba was unable to muster up another scoring chance in the final six minutes as they were eliminated from the conference tournament.

Five different Catawba players had two or more shots led by Lillie Rusher who had four total attempts off the bench. Sharon Mayes, Kasey Hahn, Hannah Dunn, and Katie Beck each recorded two shots each.

The women's soccer team will await their seeding in the NCAA Southeast Regional during the selection show on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The Indians came into the weekend ranked second in the regional rankings.
