Men's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker at Chowan on Saturday

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Coker University men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker at Chowan on Saturday (Mar. 19) in non-conference action by a score of 13-12.

The Cobras jumped out to a lead with goals from Henry Haskett and Cal Gibson, before Chowan responded to cut the lead in half part way through the first quarter. Gibson would complete the hat trick by scoring the final two goals of the frame, assisted by Haskett and Justin Beighey respectively. The Cobras led 4-1 after 15 minutes.

Zyaire Marshall opened the scoring in the second quarter off an assist from Beighey, before Chowan responded with back-to-back goals to get within 5-3. Coker would score the final two goals of the first half as Will Habel scored off a Gibson assist followed by a Gibson unassisted goal a few minutes later. Coker led 7-3 at the half.

Corey Gales scored the first goal of the second half off an assist from Gibson, before back-to-back Chowan goals got the Hawks back within three. Coker would work the lead back up to four two different times in the frame, before Chowan would cut into it at the end of the period as Coker led 10-8 headed to the fourth.

The Hawks opened the fourth quarter scoring four straight goals to take a 12-10 lead, before two unassisted markers from Haskett less than a minute apart tied things up at 12 with under three minutes to play. A Chowan goal with a minute left proved to be the game-winner for the Hawks.

Gibson and Haskett each scored four goals in the game for the Cobras, while Habel scored twice and Marshall and Gales each scored once. Beighey and Gibson each dished out two assists in the game, while Marshall and Haskett each helped on one goal in the contest. Coker scooped up 46 ground balls to Chowan's 38, led by a game-high 12 from Nathan Allan, who also won 20 of 29 faceoff attempts. Connor Gross also picked up six ground balls for the Cobras, while 12 others collected ground balls in the game. Allan also led the Cobras with four caused turnovers in the game, while Haskett recorded two and seven others each had one. Ethan Hofert made six saves between the pipes for the Cobras.  

The Cobras return to action on Saturday (Mar. 26) to host Lincoln Memorial in their White Out game. Opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Coker Athletic Field, with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
