First-place Baseball splits doubleheader at Carson-Newman to earn series win

Jefferson City, Tenn. —- The Catawba College baseball team took game one of the Saturday doubleheader at Carson-Newman to earn the series win before the Eagles walked off in extra innings in game two to avoid the sweep in South Atlantic Conference action. The Catawba Indians moved to 22-8 overall and a league-best 11-4 in conference play on the day.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 9, Carson-Newman 4

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Carson-Newman 13-10

- The Catawba Indians recorded six of eight extra-base hits

- Catawba committed four of five errors in the game

- C-N stole two of three bases in game one

- Catawba's pitchers allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks, striking out nine, while Carson-Newman's staff allowed five earned runs on 13 hits and eight walks, striking out 11

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Cooper Bryson went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk, five RBI and a run scored

- Drew Robertson was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored

- Levi Perrell added two hits, including a triple, with two walks and two runs scored

- Dylan Driver doubled, walked, drove in a run and scored another

- Payne Stolsworth earned his second win of the week and sixth of the year, allowing four runs in five innings of work; Mason Gwyn and Brandon Rodgers combined for four shutout innings of relief to close out the win

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Catawba loaded the bases with one away in the top of the first

- A two-out error by the Eagles allowed two to score

- Bryson ripped a two-RBI single up the middle to double the lead to 4-0

 

SECOND INNING

- Driver's RBI double scored Perrell to keep the runs coming

- Cole Hales followed up with an RBI double to right center, as Catawba took a 6-0 stronghold after two

 

THIRD INNING

- Carson-Newman tacked on four runs in the bottom of the third to cut their deficit to just two runs

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Robertson doubled down the right field line to lead off the seventh

- Bryson belted a three-run homer, his first of the year, to extend Catawba's lead to five runs

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Carson-Newman 9-8

- Both teams recorded just one extra-base hit; Catawba had the lone homer

- C-N committed two of three errors in the game

- Both teams recorded two steals

- Carson-Newman pitchers allowed two earned runs on nine hits and five walks, striking out eight; Catawba's staff allowed three earned runs on eight hits and nine walks, striking out three

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Carson Edmiston was excellent in the start, throwing 4.1 shutout innings on three hits and three walks, fanning three

- Hayden Simmerson extended his consecutive scoreless inning streak to 10.1 innings, as he finished out the fifth inning

- Logan Rogers was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer

- Sam Hunter added two more hits

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SIXTH INNING

- Rogers' two-run bomb in the sixth was the first score of the game for either side, giving Catawba the 2-0 lead with six outs to go

- The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half

- A pair of sac flies tied the game up at 2 after six frames

 

EIGHTH INNING

- C-N loaded the bases again with no outs in the eighth and walked off on Dalton McLain's RBI single

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba faces its third ranked opponent in eight days on Tuesday, as it visits 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke at Sammy Cox Field at 4 p.m.
