#19 Baseball splits DH at Anderson

Anderson, S.C. ---- The 19th-ranked Catawba College baseball team split a doubleheaeder to open the series at Anderson University on Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Catawba Indians remain at the top of the conference with a 31-10 overall mark and 18-5 record in conference play.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 13, Anderson 2

TEAM STATS

- Catawba out-hit Anderson 12-10

- The Catawba Indians recorded all three extra-base hits

- Catawba committed two of three errors in the contest

- The Catawba Indian pitchers allowed one earned run on 10 hits and two walks, striking out six; Anderson's staff allowed 11 earned runs on 12 hits and three walks, striking out four

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Dylan Driver was 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored

- Cole Hales went drove in two on a single and scored twice

- Logan Rogers was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored

- Cooper Bryson added a pair of hits, including a triple, driving in two and scoring another

- Austin Fine allowed one run in seven-plus innings, improving to an impressive 8-1 on the season; Brandon Rodgers provided two innings of shutout relief to close the door

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FOURTH INNING

- Hales' two-out, two-run single up the middle broke the scoreless tie in the fourth

- Rogers' double down the line scored another before Bryson's two-run triple made it a 5-0 Catawba lead after a productive fourth frame

 

FIFTH INNING

- Driver's one-out triple allowed Hunter's sac fly to score a run and add to the lead

- Anderson got on the board on JC LeGrand's RBI single in the bottom half

 

EIGHTH INNING

- Another Trojan RBI base hit made it 6-2 after the eighth

 

NINTH INNING

- Catawba added a seven-spot in the top of the ninth to extend their cushion to a comfortable 13-2 victory in game one

 

 

GAME TWO | Anderson 3, Catawba 1

TEAM STATS

- Both teams recorded seven hits

- The Catawba Indians had both extra-base hits

- AU committed both errors in game two

- Anderson had the lone stolen base in the contest

- AU's Ben Smith pitched a complete game, allowing an earned run on seven hits, striking out four; Catawba's staff allowed three earned runs on seven hits and six walks, striking out five

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Casey Gouge provided 2.2 innings of shutout relief, Carson Edmiston and Hayden Simmerson followed with 1.1 innings of relief with no runs allowed

- Levi Perrell was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored

- Drew Robertson added multiple hits including a double

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Perrell had a leadoff triple before Driver followed with an RBI single in what would turn out to be Catawba's lone run support of game two

 

SECOND INNING

- Anthony Pandolfi's two-out, RBI single tied the game in the second

 

THIRD INNING

- A walk, a steal, and an RBI single put the Trojans up with no outs in the third

- AU drew a two-out walk to add an insurance score

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba and Anderson wrap up the series Sunday with the rubber match, scheduled for 1 p.m.
