Tennis splits road matchup at Eckerd

St. Petersburg, Fla. —- The Catawba College women's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season Tuesday afternoon, defeating Eckerd College 4-3 in NCAA Division II tennis action. The men's team dropped their match with Eckerd by the same score, falling to 1-5 on the season.

The Catawba women swept the doubles matches as Alexandra Parra and Vicky Beardsley won their match 6-4, Sofia Hernandez and Carolina Correia won the point 6-3 and Miya Ami and Lena Friedrich made it a clean sweep, winning 6-3.

With the doubles point in hand, Catawba needed to split the six singles matches and did just that as Matilde Moretti won #2s 3-6, 6-4, 10-3, Correia took #4s 6-3, 6-2 and Hernandez won the point in #5s 6-2, 6-2.

On the men's side, they dropped the doubles point, but Ryan Little and Tyler Juergens took their match 6-2.

Juergens and Little went on to win their singles matches as well, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively. Sebastian Zabala made it a clean split of the singles matches by taking #6s 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.

The teams continue their spring break Florida trip this week, visiting Palm Beach Atlantic on Thursday.
