Montevallo edges Men’s Lacrosse 10-8

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College men's lacrosse team scored a season-high eight goals, but fell to the University of Montevallo on Saturday at Shuford Stadium in NCAA Division II men's lacrosse action. The Falcons improve to 4-3 overall, while the Catawba Indians drop to 0-4 on the season.

Jackson Braswell led Catawba in scoring with two goals, while Joey Lindner added a goal and two assists. Dylan Kesselring recorded a team-high four goals and Eli Horton had three caused turnovers for Catawba. James Crighton made 13 saves in goal. Connor Frederick led the Falcons with three goals scored.

Chaiton Williams scored the opening goal 31 seconds in for Montevallo before Matt Mitchell and Hunter Clarke recorded back-to-back goals to give Catawba its only lead of the game at 2-1 with 6:01 left in the first quarter. The Falcons scored three straight goals stretching into the second quarter, as UM led 4-2 less than two minutes into the second period. Nate Bladen found Lindner for a score and Braswell and Bakari Neely finished the half off strong for Catawba as the two teams entered the break tied at 5.

Frederick and Trevayne Hunter opened the second half for the Falcons with back-to-back scores, but Braswell and Kyle Chessock fired right back with two straight goals of their own, as Catawba tied the game at 7 with 2:34 left in the third. The Falcons scored a man-up goal less than 40 seconds later to retake the lead 8-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Ryan Andrews' score gave UM a little breathing room, but Frank Cetrone cut the deficit in half with a score from Lindner to make it a 9-8 game with 5:32 to go. Williams scored again for the Falcons with just under three minutes to go and Catawba could not find the back of the net again.

The Catawba Indians open up South Atlantic Conference play next week, traveling to Mars Hill on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
