Softball drops twinbill at Newberry

Newberry, S.C. —- The Catawba College softball team fell late in both ends of a doubleheader at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference softball action. The Catawba Indians fall to 18-20 overall and a 6-8 mark in league play.

 

GAME ONE | Newberry 8, Catawba 4

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Newberry 11-7

- The Wolves recorded four of six extra-base hits

- The Catawba Indians committed two of three errors

- NC edged Catawba 3-2 in stolen bases

- Newberry's pitchers allowed two earned runs on 11 hits, striking out one; Catawba's staff allowed seven earned runs on seven hits and nine walks, striking out two

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Bri Gallagher was 2-for-4 a double, an RBI and two runs scored

- Riley Tucker went 2-for-4 with a double and a run driven in

- Bri Herring and Madi Taylor also added multi-hit games

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Back-to-back doubles from Newberry with two outs in the first gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead

 

SECOND INNING

- Newberry loaded the bases with one out in the second and scored a run on a fielder's choice

 

THIRD INNING

- Tucker's RBI double got the Catawba Indians on the board in the third

- The Wolves got the run back on an RBI single up the middle in the bottom half to return their lead to 3-1

 

FOURTH INNING

- Catawba led the fourth off with back-to-back singles

- Savanna Balderston beat out an infield single to score Gallagher to get within a run

 

FIFTH INNING

- A two-out error from Newberry allowed Gallagher's two-out RBI double to tie the game

- Courtnee Carter added another two-out RBI base hit to take a 4-3 lead

- A two-run homer shifted the lead back to Newberry in the bottom half

 

SIXTH INNING

- The Wolves added a three-run homer in the sixth to extend their lead 

 

GAME TWO | Newberry 11, Catawba 10

TEAM STATISTICS

- Both teams recorded 13 hits

- The Catawba Indians had six of 10 extra-base hits

- Catawba had the lone error of game two

- The Catawba Indians recorded both steals in the game

- Newberry's pitchers allowed 10 earned runs on 13 hits and four walks; Catawba's staff also allowed 10 earned runs on 13 hits and seven walks, striking out one

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Gallagher went 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored

- Kary Hales was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored

- Herring scored two on a double and scored herself

- Tucker drove in a run on two hits and scored; Carter drove home two on a hit

- Grace Flynn was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Hales doubled to start the scoring in the top of the first

- Gallagher's two-out, two-run homer ballooned the lead to three before the Wolves got to bat

- The Wolves added two-run scoring of their own in the bottom half, starting with an RBI single to right center

- A two-run double tied the game at 3 in a wild first inning

 

THIRD INNING

- Taylor ripped an RBI single to break the tie in the third

- Carter added a two-run double to take a 6-3 advantage

- The Wolves got a run back on an RBI double in the bottom half

- Newberry scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch to trim the Catawba lead to a single run

 

FOURTH INNING

- Gallagher added to the lead again with two outs in the fourth on a single down the left field line

- The Wolves answered with an RBI single in the bottom half

 

FIFTH INNING

- Herring lifted a two-run double to left field in the fifth

- Tucker's RBI single up the middle extended the Catawba lead to 10-6

- An RBI double started a four-run fifth for the Wolves

- Newberry added runs on a double, a sac fly and a single to tie the game at 10

 

SIXTH INNING

- A sac bunt put runners on second and third for Newberry with one out

- Maddy Staples scored the go-ahead run on a sac fly foul-out

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Catawba got the tying run on base, but Newberry closed the door to earn the doubleheader sweep

- Catawba returns to Whitley Field on Saturday, hosting Carson-Newman for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
