Gallagher sets school-record hit streak in Softball’s DH vs #10 Wingate

Salisbury, N.C. —- Catawba College outfielder Bri Gallagher set the Catawba program record with a hit in 22 straight games in the doubleheader against 10th-ranked Wingate, but the Bulldogs took both ends of the doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference softball action at Whitley Field.

 

GAME ONE | Wingate 5, Catawba 1

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Wingate 7-6

- The Bulldogs had two of three extra-base hits

- Catawba committed three errors in game one

- Wingate had the lone stolen base

- The Bulldogs' pitchers allowed one earned run on seven hits and two walks, striking out seven; Catawba's staff allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks 

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Bri Herring did not allow an earned run in the final four innings of relief

- Grace Flynn went 3-for-4 

- Riley Tucker was 2-for-4 with a run scored

- Bri Gallagher doubled and drove in a run

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

THIRD INNING

- Wingate's Kaylee Hobgood broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single

- The Bulldogs recorded another RBI base hit before scoring another on an error

- Wingate followed up with an RBI double to right field

 

FIFTH INNING

- An RBI double from Hannah Stevens gave the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead

 

SIXTH INNING

- Back-to-back singles got runners on first and second with one out

- Gallagher's two-out, RBI double got Catawba on the board

- A walk loaded the bases before a diving play in the field saved more runs from coming across

 

GAME TWO | Wingate 6, Catawba 0

TEAM STATISTICS

- Wingate out-hit Catawba 6-3

- The Bulldogs had both extra-base hits in the contest

- Catawba committed all three errors in game two

- Wingate recorded two stolen bases

- The Bulldogs' staff did not allow a run on three hits, while striking out eight; Catawba's pitchers allowed four earned runs on six hits and four walks, striking out three

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Herring once again provided 2.2 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit

- Christina Brendle, Savanna Balderston and Alexis Monroe recorded the base hits for Catawba

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Hobgood opened the game with a leadoff double

- Wingate loaded the bases with nobody out

- Catawba held the damage to a single run on a Stevens RBI fielder's choice

 

FIFTH INNING

- A grand slam from Stevens opened up a 5-0 Wingate lead

- Heaven Maness added a run after singling, stealing second and scoring on an error

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba turns its attention to Senior Day on Saturday, hosting UVA Wise for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
