Trojans Split Home Doubleheader with Carson-Newman

Anderson, S.C. -Anderson University Softball split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Carson-Newman winning game one, 10-9 (9 innings), while dropping game two, 4-3 (8 innings), on Thursday afternoon the AU Softball Complex. Anderson moves to 24-6 overall and 12-4 in SAC action, while the Eagles move to 17-9 overall and 10-8 in conference play.

"Gracie Williams was phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal and I am so proud of her," said head coach Tommy Hewitt.

"We flat lost that last game, no excuses," added Hewitt.

Game 1 Summary
Anderson 10           Carson-Newman 9 (9 innings)

Anderson jumped out to a, 4-0, lead after three complete innings of play. Carson-Newman answered back scoring three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth inning, 7-4. The Black and Gold was able to score two runs in the fifth and then scored the tying run in the sixth inning. Neither team scored in the seventh, forcing the game into the international tie break rule.

Both teams pushed across a run in the eighth inning, with the Eagles scoring another run in the ninth.  AU Kayson Boatner's deep fly ball advanced the placed runner on second, Kennedy Burton, to third. Morgan Charter's line out to leftfield scored Burton from third to tie the game at nine apiece. Hannah Whitaker singled to right field, advancing to second on error by the right fielder. Jessica Neadow followed with a single to right field, scoring Whitaker to win game one.

Senior Harlie Duncan got the nod in game one, giving up eight hits and striking out five batters before being lifted in favor of senior Sarah Middleton (5-2). Middleton  gave up four hits and struck out eight Eagles.

KEY TROJANS

-Gracie Williams batted 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored.
-Kennedy Burton went 2-for-5 with three runs scored.
-Kayson Boatner batted 2-for-4 with a walk and one run scored.
-Morgan Charter went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Game 2 Summary
Anderson 3       Carson-Newman 4 (8 innings)

Carson-Newman scored one run in the first inning, with the Trojans working out of a mini-jam. The Trojans scored two runs in the second inning, carrying a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning. The Eagles were able to tie the game at, 2-2, after scoring a lone run in the sixth inning. After a scoreless seventh inning, the eighth inning began with the international tie break rule. The Eagles were able to scratch out two runs, while AU could only produce one run in the decisive eighth inning.

Freshman Lake Maxwell (8-3) took the loss for the Trojans. Maxwell gave up eight hits, while striking out four.

KEY TROJANS

-Boatner went 3-for-4.
-Charter batted 2-for-3 with a sacrifice
-Yas Laureano went 1-for-3 with a two-run shot.

UP NEXT

Anderson will travel to SAC foe Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday. First-Pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 pm.
