Wingate's Wilshire Named USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year
New Orleans, La.----Wingate University senior Vanisha Wilshire (Louisburg, N.C.) is the Southeast Region indoor Field Athlete of the Year, as named by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) this week. Wilshire wins the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive season.
"I'm thrilled that Vanisha was selected to receive this honor," Wingate University distance coach Ashley Glover says. "She is focused and driven throughout all aspects of her training and that has resulted in the performances she has had this season. I'm glad that the other coaches were able to recognize her hard work. As always, I'm proud of the way she represents the program, University and South Atlantic Conference on the track."
This week, Wilshire will compete in her third NCAA Division II indoor national championship meet at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kan. In February, Wilshire was named the South Atlantic Conference Field Athlete of the Meet after her performance in the league indoor championships Saturday and Sunday. Wilshire won the high jump (1.62 meters) and the triple jump (12.02 meters) and placed third in the long jump.
This season, Wilshire won the JDL Fast Track Early Bird Duals high jump in December with a leap of 1.75 meters (indoor school record and indoor personal best). Her mark of 1.75 meters was tied for the fourth-best NCAA Division II leap this season.
Wilshire was an NCAA high jump All-American in both indoor (1.74 meters) and outdoor (1.81 meters) track and field last season. She was the national runner-up at the 2018 NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet in Charlotte as a junior. Wilshire has five career All-American trophies.
