Wingate’s Marta Beesmans Barquero Named 2025 SAC Women’s Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate University's Marta Beesmans Barquero has been named the 2025 South Atlantic Conference Women's Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced.
The SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the conference's championship sports and is voted on by the SAC Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.
A senior marketing major, Beesmans Barquero has demonstrated academic excellence throughout her career, earning a 3.544 GPA. She has been named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, the Dean's List four times, and the President's List, while also being recognized as a CSCAA Scholar All-American.
In the pool, Beesmans Barquero played a crucial role in Wingate's continued dominance, helping lead the Bulldogs to another SAC Championship title. She captured individual gold medals at the 2025 SAC Swimming Championships in both the 100-yard Backstroke (54.89) and the 200-yard Backstroke (1:58.97), showcasing her talent at the conference level. Her success also extended to the national stage as she qualified for the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships.
Beyond her academic and athletic achievements, Beesmans Barquero has been a dedicated leader for Wingate as a team captai. She has served as a swimming lessons instructor, volunteering to help teach and mentor young swimmers. Additionally, she and the Wingate swim team have provided essential support for local high school swim meets, volunteering as lifeguards, timers, and event staff at the Wingate University Natatorium.
With her commitment to academic success, athletic excellence, and community service, Beesmans Barquero exemplifies the qualities of a SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
