CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman University women's soccer team, ranked 14th in the nation and first in the southeast region, improved to 18-2 on the year after picking up a 1-0 win over Wingate University in the South Atlantic Conference Championship for the first time since 2009. The Bulldogs, ranked second in the region, fall to 15-2-2 on the year after falling twice to the Eagles this season.
The lone goal of today's championship game came in the 38th minute when Julianne Herrity chipped the ball over Wingate's backline to Nikki McWilliams, who then chipped the ball over Wingate's goalkeeper, Alexis Jones, and into the back of the net.
The Eagles outshot Wingate 7-3, putting four shots on goal. Jessica Fraiture completed play with two saves in goal, while Jones finished with two as well.
Carson-Newman's win gives them an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship, while the Bulldogs will have to wait for an at-large bid.
