Queens Wins 2019 South Atlantic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship
WINGATE, N.C. – Queens women's lacrosse capped off an impressive conference season with a 22-8 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne at Graham Gill Field on the campus of Wingate University. The nationally-ranked Royals have now won a program-record 14 games in a row and their sixth consecutive SAC Championship.
Queens opened the game with eight unanswered points within the first 10 minutes of action. The Bears responded with a run of their own, bringing the score to 8-4. A pair of three goal runs, broken up by a Lenoir-Rhyne point, sent the Royals to the half with a 14-5 lead.
The SAC Co-Freshman of the Year Gia Colombo opened the second half with a goal for the Bears, but the Royals responded with a four-point run to enforce a running clock. To end the game, Queens outscored Lenoir-Rhyne 4-2 to earn the 14-point win.
Individually, SAC Player of the Year Ally Blood led the Royals offensively with seven points on four goals and three assists, including her 100th career goal. Kara Blanchard collected five goals, while Katie Wardle scored four. Rachel Perrett and Hanna Scott each earned a hat trick. Defensively, Chase Brokaw, the tournament MVP, finished with seven saves on the afternoon, alongside two ground balls. Blood and Wardle scooped up a team-high three ground balls, and Sydney Hussey controlled over half of Queens' 15 draws with eight to her credit. Wardle also led the way with a pair of caused turnovers.
The NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse selection show is scheduled to air on Sunday, May 5 on NCAA.com, which will determine the postseason fates of the SAC schools.
