Wingate's Mrochen Voted as South Atlantic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate's Bastian Mrochen was voted the 2024 South Atlantic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced today.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.
Mrochen, a senior from Liebenau, Germany, holds a 3.98 grade point average in psychology. He has been named to the Wingate University President's List seven times and has made the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of his first three years on campus. He was the SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's cross country in 2021, 2022 and 2023 and was the SAC Elite 23 award winner for men's outdoor track and field in 2023.
Athletically, Mrochen finished fourth in the 10,000 meters at the SAC Outdoor meet as Wingate won SAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He was an all-region performer in two events in 2023. He was the SAC runner-up in the 5,000 meter as a sophomore and the SAC Champion in the 10,000 meter as a junior. In Cross Country, he was All-Region and team co-captain for the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championship team and earned the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. He finished second at the NCAA National Championship meet as a junior.
Off the course, he was a private tutor for high school and middle school students in math, English and French. He also volunteered for the annual One Day, One Dog Day of Service and the United Day of Caring. He is a three-time team captain in cross country and was a Lab Manager for Wingate Developmental Psychology lab this year.
