ROCK HILL, S.C. – Anderson and Lincoln Memorial went scoreless for nearly 88 minutes on Sunday in the 2012 Food Lion SAC Championship men's final, until AU sophomore Daniel Colvin netted the game winner, sending the Trojans to their third-straight title.
With the victory, Anderson becomes the first team in SAC history to win three SAC Men's Soccer Championship titles in a row.
Colvin's goal came with 2:39 remaining in regulation on a breakaway past the LMU defense. His shot found the far post, beating keeper Marcel Barwanietz. It was the Tipp City, Ohio native's first goal of the 2012 season.
The championship capped a late-season surge from Anderson, as the Trojans rebounded from a 1-8-2 start to earn the Championship's No. 5 seed. Led by keeper Lukas Hesse – the SAC Championship's Most Valuable Player – AU didn't allow a goal in its three tournament wins.
Hesse was dominant on Sunday, stopping six LMU shots-on-goal. Overall, the third-seeded Railsplitters outshot Anderson 15-8 – including a 12-4 advantage in the second period - but couldn't find the net.
Colvin and defender Zak Moss – who were both selected to the All-Tournament Team – led Anderson with two shots apiece. LMU's offensive attack was paced by forward Leonardo Germniani's four shots and SAC Player of the Year Mario Pinto's three.
Germniani and Pinto earned All-Tournament Team honors, joining teammates Barwanietz and Chris Nash.
Anderson had two more players named to the All-Tournament Team as well in midfielder Shu Ogawa and defender Lars Zimmerman.
Rounding out the All-Tournament Team were Carson-Newman's Trustan Dafydd and Lucas Siqueira and Mars Hill's Zac Scott and Alex Mullen.
Because the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship does not award automatic qualification bids, Anderson's season has likely come to an end. The rest of the SAC will learn its postseason fate on Monday night when the championship field is announced.
