WINGATE, N.C. – Wingate men's lacrosse capped off an impressive conference season with an 11-9 victory over nationally-ranked Queens on their home turf at Graham Gill Field. The nationally-ranked Bulldogs have now won their last seven games and claimed their third straight SAC Championship.
In the first quarter, the Bulldogs were down 2-1 before adding four unanswered goals to end the period. Wingate led 6-5 at the half in the tightly-contested game. After a 14-minute scoring drought which saw Queens tie things up at seven, Josh Ferentinos scored a goal with 13:30 left in the game, a lead which Wingate would never relinquish.
Individually, Joe Cooper led the Bulldog offensive attack with a hat trick, while Conor Gronbach and SAC Player of the Year Alex Llerandi netted a pair each. Tournament MVP Wyatt Weiseman won 15-of-24 face-offs and also contributed a goal to the cause. Defensively, Mike Dilegge caused three turnovers to go along with his three ground balls. Alex Cordero collected 10 saves and a team-high four ground balls.
The NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse selection show is scheduled to air on Sunday, May 5 on NCAA.com, which will determine the postseason fates of the SAC schools.
