ANDERSON, S.C. – Behind sophomore Tom Forster's three-round, 5-under-par 211, Carson-Newman claimed its fourth South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Championship by eight strokes over runner-up Newberry, as the Eagles won the 2018 SAC Championship on a par-72, 7,002-yard Cobb's Glen Country Club layout.
No. 20 Carson-Newman (878) defended its title, while claiming its third conference championship in five years and posted the first back-to-back title runs since Newberry accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009. Eighth-ranked Newberry (886), which was in sixth place following Sunday's opening round, climbed into second on Monday and held onto second place by five shots over third-place Wingate (891). Queens (893) was two shots further back in fourth place, with Coker (895) jumping into fifth place after posting the day's second-best round. The host Trojans (902) turned in their best round of the three-day event and claimed sixth, while Lenoir-Rhyne (905) finished in seventh place.
No. 16 Lincoln Memorial (907), Mars Hill (911), Catawba (925) and Tusculum (962) rounded out the final 11-team standings.
Forster began the day four strokes off the pace, but notched five birdies during the round and finished the event one shot ahead of Anderson sophomore Jake Miller to become the first Carson-Newman golfer to earn tourney MVP honors since former Eagle standout Tanner Davis in 2004. Queens' Henry Bryden finished third, while Mars Hill's Harry Butler took home fourth place.
