ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- In a wild opening day of the 2024 SAC Baseball Opening Round, top-seeded Catawba was the lone higher seed to advance to the winners bracket and they did so in thrilling fashion. Trailing 7-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Indians pushed two runs across in each of the seventh and eighth innings. With one on and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Logan Rogers hit a walkoff bomb to center field to send the Indians past 8-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne.
In other action, 2-seed Coker fell to 7-seed Carson-Newman 8-4. No. 6 Newberry blitzed No. 3 Wingate to in 18-6 to set up the six and seven seeds meeting in the winners bracket. With weather incoming, that game was moved up to a 10 a.m. first pitch. No. 5 Lincoln Memorial used the long ball to defeat No. 4 Tusculum 16-13. LMU had a season-high five home runs in the victory.
Tomorrow's slate starts with Carson-Newman and Newberry at 10 a.m. in Hartsville, S.C. followed by Catawba and Lincoln Memorial at 11 a.m. in Salisbury, N.C. Following those games, Coker and Wingate will meet in an elimination game at Coker and LR and Tusculum will have an elimination game at Catawba.
