GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Garrett Dupuis hit a home run in each game including his grand slam in the night-cap as the Tusculum University baseball team swept a doubleheader over visiting Goldey-Beacom College Monday at Pioneer Park.
Tusculum pounded out 16 hits including three-hit performances by Daulton Martin, Nate Montgomery and Seth DeHaven as the Pioneers prevailed 15-3 in the opener. In the second game, Dupuis broke a 1-1 tie with his bases loaded home run to propel TU to a 9-1 victory in the series finale.
The Pioneers (10-7) complete the four-game weekend sweep over the Lightning (1-5) and extend TU's winning streak to nine consecutive games. Tusculum's nine-game winning streak is currently tied for the ninth longest in program history.
Martin capped a remarkable two-day stretch as the TU junior went 11-of-15 (.715) against Goldey-Beacom with seven doubles, one triple and scored 11 runs in his four games in the series.
Montgomery recorded six hits on the afternoon while Martin posted five including three doubles.
Game 1: Tusculum 15, Goldey-Beacom 3
The Pioneers exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning en route to a 15-3 win over Goldey-Beacom in Monday's first game.
The three-hit trio of Martin, Montgomery and DeHaven led the TU hit parade, while Bryson Ford accounted for a pair of doubles with two runs scored and two RBI for the Black & Orange.
Martin tallied two extra base hits with a double and his 11th career triple which moves him into sole possession of fifth place in that category in the Tusculum record book.
Tusculum scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to RBI singles from DeHaven and Chase Wullenweber. The Lightning answered in the top of the third when Calvin Clark drew a bases loaded walk and Justin Hill followed with a two-out single to tie the game at 2-2.
Tusculum bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a RBI ground out from Trey Hinton and a two-out single from Jarel McDade for a 4-2 TU lead.
After GBC scratched out an unearned run in the fourth inning against TU starter Kent Noe, Tusculum posted a seven-run frame in the fifth as 11 Pioneers went to the plate thanks to six hits, one walk and a hit batter. The big hits of the inning came on RBI doubles from Martin and Ford.
Tusculum added four runs in the eighth including a two-run single from Martin and a solo homer by Dupuis.
TU reliever Sean McDaniel (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he went two innings with three strikeouts. Trevor Lloyd pitched effectively as he tossed two hitless innings, while Justin Wallace pitched a perfect ninth frame to end the game.
Game 2: Tusculum 9, Goldey-Beacom 1
Dupuis broke open a 1-1 tie with his grand slam in the fourth inning, his second homer of the day, as Tusculum rolled to a 9-1 win.
Montgomery posted his second 3-hit game of the day while also driving in four RBI, while Martin went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
TU starting pitcher Harbor Jefferson posted his first win of the season as he went six innings, scattered four hits, allowed one run, walked two and struck out seven in his 92-pitch performance.
Tusculum mustered only seven hits, but drew nine walks including three from Hinton as the sophomore recorded six walks on the day and nine for the four-game series with the Lightning.
Montgomery put TU on the board in the first inning with his double down the right field line. GBC tied the game in the second on Trent Hearn's two-out triple to right.
In the third inning, Martin led off with a double and after two fly outs, Hinton and McDade drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Dupuis. Dupuis lifted a high fly ball down the left field line which cleared the fence as well as the bases as TU took a 5-1 advantage.
The Pioneers added a run in the fourth as Jaden Steagall led off with a double and scored on Montgomery's two-out single to center. The Pioneers put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth including a RBI double from Martin and a two-run double from Montgomery. For Martin, it was his South Atlantic Conference leading 13th double of the season and the 45th two-bagger of his career which are the seventh-most in school history.
With TU leading 9-1, Austin Collins came on in the seventh to retire the side in order on 10 pitches.
The Pioneers will play their fifth game in three days when they host in-state foe King University on Tuesday for a Southeast Region showdown beginning at 5 p.m.
