
Softball falls in opening game of SAC Tournament at #7 Wingate
Wingate, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team dropped its first game of the Opening Round of the SAC Tournament at the hands of 7th-ranked and top-seeded Wingate on Friday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Wingate out-hit Catawba 9-6
- The Bulldogs recorded four of six extra-base hits with both homers
- Catawba committed the lone error of the game
- Wingate had both stolen bases of the afternoon
- The Bulldogs' pitchers allowed three earned runs on six hits, striking out 10; Catawba's staff allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and five walks, striking out two
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Riley Tucker went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored
- Tucker draws within one double of tying the program's all-time, currently held by assistant coach Allie (Marshall) Lyerly
- Kary Hales was 2-for-3 with two RBI
- Grace Flynn and Christina Brendle recorded Catawba's other hits
- Bri Herring closed the game in the circle, allowing two runs in four innings
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST INNING
- Hali Scott's three-run homer got the scoring started for the Bulldogs in the first
SECOND INNING
- Raelynn Kramer followed with another homer in the second
THIRD INNING
- An RBI single from Heaven Maness extended the Bulldog lead to 5-0 in the third
FIFTH INNING
- Wingate led by as much as 7-0 after an error scored a run and Kramer drove in another on an RBI double
SIXTH INNING
- Flynn doubled with one out before Brendle followed with an infield single
- Tucker's RBI double scored Flynn to get Catawba on the board
- Hales followed up with a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to four
UP NEXT
- Catawba faces the loser between Lenoir-Rhyne and Tusculum in an elimination game back at the Wingate Softball Complex at 1 p.m. on Saturday
