
Mars Hill bounces back, downs C-N in five
The Mars Hill volleyball team (4-2, 4-2 SAC) defeated Carson-Newman (4-2, 3-2 SAC) in five sets (25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 19-25, 15-12) Saturday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (4-2, 4-2 SAC) defeated Carson-Newman (4-2, 3-2 SAC) in five sets (25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 19-25, 15-12) Saturday afternoon.
Tied at seven in the final stanza, the Lions, led by Sarah Goddard's three kills, went on a 4-0 run. The Eagles responded with three straight to cut the lead down to 11-10 before another 3-0 run by the Lions provided them several four match points. The Eagles clawed two away before the Lions were able to clinch the win in their second five-set contest in as many nights.
Goddard came up clutch in the fifth, hammering home four kills on 10 attempts.
The first set saw the Lions pull away midway through the frame, 12-9, before a 5-1 Carson-Newman run saw the Eagles up 14-13. The Lions found themselves down 19-15 before reeling off 10 of the last 11 points of the frame. Jana Cuk recorded three kills in the run and a set-high five. Grace Lilly added four kills in the set.
Carson-Newman tied the game at one, taking the second set by a score of 25-20. The duo of Megan Oldenburger and Katie Parnell posted four kills apiece, followed by Kaina Roehrkasse and Emily Harnischfeger's three each. Sara Pasour recorded six assists, two aces, two digs, and one kill in the frame.
Mars Hill trailed 10-8 after a 3-0 run from the Eagles, but responded with an 8-1 run to lead 16-11 in the latter stages. Goddard and Lilly recorded two kills apiece in the run. Another lengthy run at the end of the set saw the Lions go up 2-1 heading into the fourth. Lilly led the Lions with five kills, hitting .500 in the set. Mars Hill recorded four aces in the set with two from Cuk, and one apiece from Pasour and Ully Martins.
Carson-Newman dominated the fourth set, hitting .250 compared to the Lions' .065. Parnell slammed down five of her six attempts to hit .833 in the set while Oldenburger added four kills and 10 digs.
Goddard and Oldenburger led their respective teams with 14 kills apiece. Oldenburger collected 26 digs while Goddard grabbed 19, both posting double-doubles.
Parnell dropped 13 kills followed by Erin Edwards' 12 on the night. Taylor Rohr netted a double-double with 27 assists and 21 digs.
Lilly ended the contest with 13 kills and 17 digs. Pasour recorded 22 assists, 20 digs, four aces, and two kills on the night while Martins led all players with 31 digs.
Mars Hill returns to the court on Tuesday, March 23 when they face Wingate on the road. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
