HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

Consecutive service aces gave the home-standing Eagles a quick 3-0 lead, but a rare kill from Gardella and a block by Yeager and Blas highlighted a 4-0 spurt to put Limestone on top. Carson-Newman responded with an 8-3 run to open a 11-7 cushion, but a pair of home errors kept the Saints in the set.

The Eagles were fast to get back on track, however, and began pulling away by running off six straight points to extend the margin to 18-9 late in the opening set. A vicious kill by Blas and attack by Yeager temporarily halted the momentum, but Carson-Newman was able to take the match lead with a 25-12 win.

Second Set

A perfectly placed ball from Yeager and some massive blows by Curran, Blas, and Lousignont helped Limestone split the first 10 points of the second frame with the Eagles, but C-N would use a 7-2 run to create some separation, 12-7. Curran would record another impressive kill as the Saints climbed to 12-9.

Blas capped the 3-1 mini-run for the Blue and Gold before Carson-Newman answered with two straight points to push the lead to 15-10. Curran cut the margin to four with another hard-hit ball, but the Eagles continued to pull away behind a 5-1 spurt to make it 20-12. Kills from Lousignont and Bowen closed the gap to six, but the home team would take the second set, 25-17, and a comfortable 2-0 match cushion.

Third Set

Carson-Newman raced out to a 7-2 advantage in the third set, only giving up points to Limestone during that stretch on errors. Curran and Lousignont each dropped in a pair of kills to key a 5-3 stretch to pull the Blue and Gold to within 10-7, but the Eagles answered with an 10-4 run to expand their lead to 20-11 late.

An assisted block from both Lousignont and Blas briefly brought the long C-N run to a close, but Carson-Newman was able to complete the quick 3-0 sweep with a 25-14 set win the third and final frame.

TURNING POINT

Limestone managed to keep close early in the first two sets but runs of 8-3 and 7-2 in the first and second frame, respectively, created some separation for Carson-Newman. The Saints never really threatened the Eagles on the afternoon as the home team comfortable won each set to complete the 3-0 match sweep.

NOTABLES

  • The Saints have now lost four straight and five of the last six in conference play
  • Limestone logged just five kills in the opening set – the Eagles committed seven errors
  • The Blue and Gold have lost all three meetings with Carson-Newman this calendar year, including twice in the spring 2021 season – all three meetings have been played in Jefferson City
