ANDERSON, S.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (10-9, 7-5 SAC) was defeated 3-1 at the hands of Anderson (15-3, 11-2 SAC) Saturday afternoon on the road.
The Lions held a 22-16 lead late in the first set. Anderson, led by Hailee Wilhelm, scored four straight points to pull within two. Mars Hill, with set two set points, allowed the Trojans to claw back to a 24-24 tie. The Trojans fought off another set point and Wilhelm's two aces at the end of the set gave Anderson the first frame.
The Trojans once again came from behind in the second set. Trailing 12-9, they reeled off six straight points to take the 15-12 lead. Anderson closed out the set on 7-1 run to take the frame, 25-18.
In a nailbiting third set, the Lions once again sacrificed two set points to Anderson. However, an error by the Trojans provided Mars Hill the opportunity to take the third. Kamya Latson's kill gave Mars Hill that third set by a score of 26-24.
In the third set of the afternoon that required extra points to be played, it was Mars Hill that had to force the late frame tie in the fourth. Tying the game off of an Anderson error, Mars Hill was unable to follow up as kills from Wilhelm and Regan Duty completed the season sweep over the Lions.
Sarah Goddard led the Lions with 11 kills on the day, followed by Sally Anne Johnson's 10. Ully Martins led the team with 22 digs and added three aces. Sara Pasour had a team-high 19 assists.
The Lions return home on Tuesday, October 22nd to host Lenoir-Rhyne as they kickoff a four-game homestand. Tuesday night's game is the annual "Dig Pink" contest where donations can be made to aid in breast cancer research. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
