JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn – Carson-Newman broke out the brooms for the seventh time this season, taking down Emory & Henry for its fourth consecutive win.
Carson-Newman (16-6, 12-2 SAC) celebrated Senior Night in style with a sweep of Emory & Henry (4-18, 1-12 SAC) to keep its home record a perfect 7-0.
"We did a good job with our offense, Blair [Cherry] spreading the ball a lot, making sure the ball was to the pins and fast, and bringing it inside after the block kind of got spread on the other side." Carson-Newman volleyball head coach Cat Collins said. "We set a lot of goals for this game, and a high hitting percentage was one of them."
Carson-Newman hit over .300 through the first two sets, ending the night hitting .271.
Taylor Adams (Covington, Ga.) was among the seniors celebrated on Friday night. She put on a performance that led the Eagles in kills with 12 to earn Food City Player of the Game honors.
"[Emory & Henry] definitely gave me the line a lot, and I saw a lot of seams tonight," Adams said. "I was trying to be really patient on my approach tonight, and I was really able to see my blockers tonight and go around them, and Blair gave me the opportunity to do that."
Blair Cherry (Knoxville, Tenn.) collected her 12th double-double of the season with 35 assists and 18 digs. Taylor Keeran (Galion, Ohio) put up an impressive number of her own, hitting over .700 through the first two sets before slightly returning to Earth, finishing the night at .500.
Maddie Hurst (Blaine, Tenn.) also had a notable night, hitting .455 with 11 kills. Bennett McCombs (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) led the charge defensively with 26 digs.
First Set (25-16, C-N) – The Eagles attacked early and often in the opening frame, hitting .306 aided by three blocks and eight attacking errors from E&H. Emerson Ahsmuhs (Placentia, Calif.) set the pace early with four kills in the first set.
Second Set (25-16, C-N) – In déjà vu from set one, the Eagles took a two sets to none lead with the same set score as the first. Only the Eagles seemed to get even better, hitting .383 as a team after the court change. Carson-Newman never trailed after an early 8-1 run. Keeran connected on five of her six attacks, hitting .833 in the set, while Maddie Hurst found seven kills in the frame.
Third Set (25-21, C-N) – The Wasps wouldn't go down without a fight, finding seven blocks in the third set alone. A set that featured eight ties and five lead changes. The Eagles leaned on the heroics of Adams, who had five kills in the final set, including the game-ender on match point. McCombs had 15 digs in the set that helped keep E&H off the scoreboard to break out the brooms for C-N.
Carson-Newman has now won all six meetings against Emory & Henry and is 18-2 in sets. The Eagles look ahead to Wednesday, Nov. 6, for a home contest against Mars Hill.
