GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum third baseman Max Schmarder recorded four hits on the day including a RBI single to drive in the go-ahead run in the second game as the Pioneers swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader over visiting Emory & Henry Saturday at Pioneer Park.
The Pioneers won the opener 8-3 and rallied from a 4-0 deficit to claim the night-cap, 11-7. Tusculum (13-20, 8-10 SAC) completes the weekend sweep of the Wasps (10-24, 3-15 SAC) as the Pioneers have won five of its last seven outings.
Schmarder recorded two hits in each game on Saturday to extend his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games tying him for the fifth-longest in program history. He matches the 23-game run by former TU All-American Daulton Martin from 2017-2018.
Game 1: Tusculum 8, Emory & Henry 3
TU starter Luke Absher pitched a seven-inning gem while Tusculum used a five-run, fifth inning in the Pioneers' 8-3 win in Saturday's opener.
Emory & Henry got on the board with a run in the first inning as Jared Foley led off with a single and later scored on Jacob Bebber's RBI hit.
Tusculum tied the game in the third when Ty Smith belted a two-out double to right field. He would score the go-ahead run later in the frame on Schmarder's RBI single to center.
The Pioneers scored five times in the fifth inning as nine batters went to the plate. Webster got things started with a lead-off double and scored on Landon Dockery's two-bagger as TU led 3-1. Ty Smith followed with a base hit up the middle to score Dockery for a 4-1 advantage. Schmarder singled again to put runners at first and second. A throwing error on a bunt allowed both runners to score as Tusculum led 6-1. Ryan Ortega added a RBI single later in the frame as Tusculum went up 7-1.
The Pioneers tacked on another run in the seventh when Ben Scartz doubled and scored on Oretega's second RBI single of the game.
Meanwhile, Absher (2-3) was brilliant as he allowed one run on five hits in his 75-pitch performance.
The Wasps would score two runs in the top of the eighth inning to trim the deficit to 8-3. But reliever Mason Huffstickler, who took over at the beginning of the frame, rebounded and recorded the final three outs of the inning.
In the ninth, Ayden Moore ended the game retiring the side in order including a pair of strikeouts.
Tusculum finished the game with 14 hits which included six doubles. Six players recorded two-hit games including Webster, Dockery, Smith, Schmarder, Scartz and Ortega.
Game 2: Tusculum 11, Emory & Henry 7
Ben Scartz went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Caid Sanders tossed three shutout innings in Tusculum's 11-7 come-from-behind victory.
Emory & Henry jumped out of the gate scoring four times in the first inning thanks to four straight hits to start the game and finished the frame with six hits overall.
Tusculum answered with three unearned runs in its half of the first with the big hit coming on Scartz's two-run single as TU trailed 4-3.
The Wasps added a run in the second and two more in the fourth to extend its advantage to 6-3. In the first, Jacob Better had a RBI single. In the fourth, Rhett Barker led off with a triple off the left field wall and scored on Foley's ensuing single. Foley would cross the plate himself thanks to Steven Smith's one-out single.
Jake McKenna took over for reliever Scout Martin, who pitched three strong innings. McKenna hit Bebber with a pitch to put runners at first and second. But he would get a double-play ground out to end the threat as the Wasps led 7-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Tusculum scored three times with no outs including a two-run double off the bat of Dockery. But E&H turned a double play and got a fly out to preserve a 7-6 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the first two runners got aboard as Sanders took over for McKenna. A bunt moved the runners over and Sanders got a shallow fly out as the Wasps had two runners in scoring position. With Foley at the plate and a 3-1 count, the skies opened up causing a nearly two-hour rain delay.
When the weather cleared, Sanders worked the count full as Foley lined a deep fly to right field which was snagged on the warning track by Ortega to end the inning.
Tusculum tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Omar Carreras led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A walk to Ortega put runners on the corners as Sawyer Pace came through with a RBI single to knot the game at 7-7.
In the sixth inning, Sanders recorded a strikeout of the lead-off batter, but surrendered a double to Steven Smith. Bebber moved him over to third with his fly out to Ortega in right. The relay throw to third went wide as Smith made the turn and headed for home. But Sanders was backing-up on the play and his throw to home was in time to tag Smith out at the plate for the inning-ending double-play.
In the bottom sixth with a runner at second with two outs, Schmarder singled up the middle to bring home Dockery with the go-ahead run. Carreras singled and Scartz posted his third RBI of the game with his single to make it a 9-7. Ortega plated the third and fourth runs of the inning with a double as Tusculum led 11-7.
In the seventh, Sanders (1-2) worked around a lead-off single and retired the next three batters to secure his first win of the season. He allowed two hits in his three shutout innings.
Tusculum accounted for 10 hits including two each from the trio of Schmarder, Carreras and Scartz. Webster reached base in all four of his plate appearances thanks to a walk and was hit by a pitch three times, tying the school record he matched earlier this season.
Schmarder is five games shy of the hitting streak record which is held by former TU All-American Maikol Gonzalez during the 2008 season. He also extends his on-base streak to 28 games in a row, tied for the eighth longest in TU history with Zane Keener (2022-2023).
The Pioneers will be on the road five straight games beginning with Tuesday's 4 p.m. contest at Young Harris.
