MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (8-0, 4-0 SAC) swept (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) Carson-Newman (10-2, 3-1 SAC) Tuesday night inside Stanford Arena.
The win snapped an Eagles' nine-match winning streak and extended the Lions winning streak to eight.
The teams battled back-and-forth in the first set with the Lions pulling away late and closing out the set on a Sarah Goddard kill. Mars Hill hit .167 in the frame to Carson-Newman's .103.
Mars Hill boasted a dominant performance in the second set, hitting .263 to Carson-Newman's .140 and holding a 10-point advantage, 22-12. The Eagles clawed into the Mars Hill lead, pulling to within two, 24-22, but another set-clinching kill from Goddard put the Lions up two sets entering the final frame.
The Lions hit a game-high .286 in the final frame, recording 15 kills on 35 attempts with Nikkayla Stewart's fourth kill of the game closing out the contest.
Julia Wheeler led all players with 15 kills while Emmagrace Cobb hit a game-high .556 with 10 kills on 18 attempts.
Goddard led the Lions with 12 kills, hitting .250 on the night. Jana Cuk added 11 kills and recorded one block and five block assists. Laela Jimenez led the Lions with 16 digs while Jordan Schmucker collected a game-high 32 assists. Jada Cannon notched nine kills and 13 digs.
Mars Hill returns to the floor for game two of their three-game homestand on Saturday, September 27 when they host Limestone. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
