Emory & Henry Softball Sweeps Concord, 15-2 & 19-6, In A Pair Of Run-Rule Games Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Softball Team (10-3) kept rolling on Saturday earning a rule-rule sweep over Concord University (2-7) in its home opener. The Wasps won the first game, 15-2, and closed the day out with a 19-6 victory. Both games ended after five innings.

Game One – Emory & Henry 15, Concord 2(five innings)
Concord got a pair of runs in the top of the first as Lacie Lewis and Alina Giles had RBI base hits. The Wasps responded with nine runs in the bottom of the frame with the first three coming across on bases-loaded walks. Senior centerfielder Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) had a two-RBI double later to highlight the frame.

In the third, the E&H defense slammed the door with a triple play. The Wasps added three runs in the bottom of the frame for a 12-2 lead. After senior designated player Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.) drew another bases-loaded walk, sophomore third baseman Tristyn Tofano (Roanoke, Va.) notched a two-run single through the left side.

The Wasps capped the scoring in the fourth with three more runs. Senior right fielder Danielle King (Spencer, Va.) hit a two-run home run to left field while Taylor had a RBI base hit up the middle for the 15-2 final score.

E&H junior lefty Malorie Reeves (Galax, Va.) earned the abbreviated complete-game win, scattering two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Josi Ervin suffered the loss for Concord, allowing eight runs on two hits and four walks in just two-thirds of an inning.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 19, Concord 6(five innings)
Emory & Henry exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the first. Tofano hit a two-run home run while Taylor had a three-run shot later in the frame. Williams and junior second baseman Abigail Street (Glade Spring, Va.) each had a two-run single as well.

In the second, the Mountain Lions got one back as Reghan Hintz drove in a run with an infield single. The Wasps tacked on eight more for a 19-1 lead. King had a two-run double while Taylor hit another home run, putting another two runs on the board. Fifth-year designated player Katelyn Siekerka (El Cajon, Calif.) had a pair of RBI base hits in the frame.

Concord scored twice in the top of the third as Courtney Raines hit a two-run home run to make it 19-3 in the fourth, the Mountain Lions added three for what would be the final 19-6 score.

Wasp sophomore Destiny Good (Staunton, Va.) allowed three earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work, picking up the win. CU's Mahailey Nicholson took the loss as she was chased after two-thirds of an inning, allowing 11 runs on seven hits and two walks.
