No. 5 Wingate Men’s Lacrosse Tops Emory & Henry, 23-5, In SAC Play Friday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Men's Lacrosse Team (0-10, 0-5 SAC) fell to No. 5 nationally ranked Wingate University (7-2, 3-2) inside the Food City Sports Complex Friday afternoon. The Wasps battled, but eventually dropped a 23-5 decision to the Bulldogs.

How It Happened
- The Wasps defense came to play to begin the game as they kept the nation's No. 5 team off of the scoreboard over the opening eight minutes. Wingate finally got on the board at the 6:59 mark and added another goal 24 seconds later for the 2-0 lead, but Emory & Henry had a response. Sophomore midfielder Jackson Swanson (Salem, Va.) opened the scoring for the Wasps with 4:49 on the clock on an assist from freshman defender Noah Parrish (Manassas, Va.), then just eight seconds later freshman faceoff Jaxon Blackshear (Hedgesville, W.Va.) found freshman attacker Collin Shell (Blountville, Tenn.) who beat the Wingate goalie to tie things up at 2-2. The Bulldogs attack woke up over the final three minutes of the opening period as they struck for seven unanswered tallies to take a 9-2 advantage into the second stanza.
- The Wingate run continued to begin the frame as they scored four more goals to push their lead out to 13-2. Swanson broke up the run with his second goal of the game, assisted by freshman defender Conner Miller (Troy, Mich.), to bring the deficit back to 13-3. Wingate would go on to add three more to take the 16-3 lead into the half.
- WU jumped on the Wasps once more to start the second half, pushing the margin out to 20-3 over the opening 10 minutes. E&H had an answer with 3:15 showing on the clock as freshman defender Kyle Dyott (Easton, Md.) found the back of the net for an unassisted tally and freshman attacker David Mewes (Greenville, S.C.) followed suit just over a minute later as he scored unassisted to make it 20-5. Wingate scored the final three goals of the game to take the win by a 23-5 final. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Swanson led the offense for the Wasps with two goals and a pair of ground balls while Mewes finished with a goal and scooped up three ground balls. Freshman Blackshear had a game-high seven ground balls and an assist.
- Miller had a team-high three caused turnovers and added an assist for his first career collegiate point. Dyott registered a goal, caused two turnovers and collected a pair of ground balls.
- Freshman goalie Mason Buttery (Carmel, Ind.) finished with 19 saves in net to give him 128 for the season, placing him atop the league leaders in the SAC. 

Wingate Individual Leaders
- James Solazzo paced the Bulldogs with a game-high four goals, two assists, five ground balls and one caused turnover. Cole Eggleton went for three goals while four other players finished with a pair of goals.
- Quad Williams, Matt Janotte and Ashton Loe split time in goal and combined for six total saves to earn the win.

- Emory & Henry is back at home next Saturday, March 29 when the Wasps host nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University. Faceoff is scheduled for noon as the first game of a doubleheader with the women's team.
