
Mars Hill cruises past C-N, 44-13
The Mars Hill football team (5-2, 5-1 SAC) defeated Carson-Newman (3-5, 2-4 SAC) by a score of 44-13 Saturday afternoon inside Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill football team (5-2, 5-1 SAC) defeated Carson-Newman (3-5, 2-4 SAC) by a score of 44-13 Saturday afternoon inside Meares Stadium.
The Lions held Carson-Newman scoreless in the first half, carrying a 23-0 lead into the half.
Mars Hill struck just 2:37 into the contest as Jimmy Urzua connected with Simeon Thompson for a 68-yard pass, putting the Lions up 7-0. Just 13 seconds later after a Mars Hill kickoff pinned the Eagles at the one-yard line, Monroe Sanderson made a tackle in the backfield for the safety.
With less than a minute remaining in the quarter, Malik Laurent punched the ball in from two yards out to put the Lions up 16-0 heading into the second. With 3:13 gone in the second, Ty Snelson rushed for a 14-yard touchdown.
The Lions outgained Carson-Newman 269-114 in the first 30 minutes of play with the Lions throwing for 202 yards.
Jervon Newton's five-yard reception put the Lions up by 30 less than five minutes into the third quarter. The Lions tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth; a two-yard run from Joraye Morrison and a 67-yard reception by Thompson for his second of the day.
The Eagles scored twice in the final 10 minutes of action.
Urzua threw for 351 yards on 13 completions and three scores. Thompson hauled in 206 receiving yards. Snelson led the Lions with 72 yards on the ground on two carries.
The Lions put up a total of 548 yards of offense, holding Carson-Newman to 244.
Mars Hill travels to UVA Wise on Saturday, October 29 for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
