HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

The Saints started its first drive of the day deep in its own territory after fumbling the opening kickoff, and would have to punt a few plays later. Newberry capitalized after getting the ball at midfield, moving the ball 50 yards on nine plays to take a 7-0 lead behind a 17-yard touchdown catch by Markell Castle.

Limestone would again start at its own 9-yard line following a penalty on a kick return, and then one play later the Wolves sacked Phillips in the end zone for a safety. Newberry then extended the margin to 16-0 midway through the first quarter as Austin Barnes capped a 10-play, 51-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run.

The Blue and Gold was able to get something working on the ensuing drive as Phillips found Hutto for a 17-yard gain before hitting Brooks on a dump-off pass for 24 yards. The Saints worked the ball down inside the Newberry 30 before the drive stalled out, but Martin would split the uprights from 45 yards out.

Second Quarter

Following a couple of defensive stops, Simmons set a program record with a 65-yard punt return as Limestone started its drive at the Newberry 25-yard line. However, the Saints would not be able to take advantage as the offense went three-and-out before Martin missed a 40-yard field goal attempt.

Third Quarter

Leading 19-3 at the start of the second half, Newberry recovered Limestone's attempted onside kick at its own 37 yard line and then promptly moved the ball 63 yards to extend its lead to 26-3. Aided by a personal foul and an unsportsmanlike penalty by the Saints, Barnes broke the plane from a yard out.

Fourth Quarter

Phillips found Rau for 36 yards on the final play of the third quarter before Martin connected on a 38-yard field goal early in the fourth to cut the deficit to 29-6. Late in the final period, the Saints posted their first touchdown of the day as Patton capped an 8-play, 80-yard drive with a 19-yard run outside the left hash.

TURNING POINT

Limestone fell behind quickly after starting its first two drives of the day inside its own 10-yard line. The Saints gave Newberry excellent field position, resulting in the go-ahead score, before the Wolves registered a safety and then an offensive score on the ensuing possession to make it 16-0 early on.

NOTABLES

  • Patton tallied his first rushing touchdown of the season
  • Limestone has combined for just 9 first-half points over the last three games
  • After giving up almost 1,000 yards rushing over the past two weeks, the defensive unit limited Newberry to 289 yards on the ground
  • The Saints have lost 10 straight games dating back to last season
