Schleuger, Pioneers sweep Newberry 3-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Sabrina Schleuger recorded a dozen kills and 10 digs to lead the Tusculum volleyball team to a 3-0 South Atlantic Conference sweep over Newberry Friday night at Eleazer Arena.

The Pioneers (15-13, 10-8 SAC) won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-23, 25-17 to snap a four-match losing streak and complete the season sweep over the Wolves (8-16, 4-13 SAC).  TC also takes over sole possession of fourth place in the league standings.

Schleuger also contributed three assists, two blocks and a service ace, while Shannon Murphy tallied 26 assists, eight digs and an ace in the win.

The Pioneers finished the night with 11 service aces, including six by Cassie Born, to go along with her nine kills, eight digs and two blocks.  Laryssa Welch added eight kills, while Mariah Lewis tallied a team-high four blocks, including the 200th of her Tusculum career, the 12th Pioneer in program history to achieve the feat.

Newberry's Toni-Anne Whitlow had 12 kills, while the setter tandem of Natalie Willis and Taylor Garrison dished out 13 and 12 assists, respectively.  Kensley Jordan had 18 digs, while Vanessa Blas finished with 13 to go with her team-high three aces.

Tusculum closed out the opening set a 6-2 run, including the final four points of the frame, including a kill and back-to-back aces from Born as TC won 25-21.  Born finished the set with four service aces.

In the second set, the Pioneers rallied from a 14-5 deficit, utilizing a 16-6 run to take a 21-20 lead following a kill from Murphy.  With the score knotted at 21-21, Tusculum got a kill and an ace from Welch for a 23-21 advantage.  The Wolves answered with consecutive points to tie the set at 23-23, but a Newberry attack error and a combined block by Born and Lewis on set point lifted the Pioneers to a 25-23 win in the frame.

Tusculum used an 8-2 run late in the third set as Schleuger and Aubrey Hawkins contributed four kills each as TC claimed the final set 25-17.

Lewis joins Welch in Tusculum's 200-block club.  Welch's 240 career blocks are the seventh-most in school history, while Lewis' 203 are 11th-most by a Pioneer.

The Pioneers, who are ranked 10th in the NCAA II Southeast Region, will wrap-up their season-long six-match road trip on Saturday for a 2 p.m. SAC contest at Coker.
