
Spartans Fall to Newberry
The University of Tampa softball team dropped both games against Newberry College on Sunday afternoon.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team dropped both games against Newberry College on Sunday afternoon.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game One):
Final: Newberry 3, Tampa 1
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (2-1), Newberry College Wolves (1-0)
Location: Naimoli Family Softball Field || Tampa, Fla.
All-Time Series: Prior to today, these two programs have met once in softball history as the Spartans mercy-ruled Newberry, 10-2 (6 Innings), in February of 2017. Corynn Miner secured the complete game victory with six innings of two-run ball. The freshman struck out four while allowing four hits and two walks. Miner and Maddie Farrell were the only two current Spartans to appear in that matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST | The Wolves' leadoff hitter, McKenzie Barneycastle, began the game with a laser up the middle. Newberry's power hitter, Haley Simonds, was plunked by a pitch to advance Barneycastle. The clean-up batter, Hannah Davis, popped up to center-field but Mariah Galhouse misplayed the pop-up which allowed Barneycastle and Simonds to score. || NC 2, UT 0
TOP 4TH | Newberry's Tedi Nunn reached on an error and advanced to second as right fielder Lexie Chevalier could not control the pop-up. Reagan Glanz used a sacrifice bunt to move Nunn to third. Nunn scored on a passed ball to extend the lead for the Wolves. || NC 3, UT 0
BOT 6TH | Chevalier reached base on a free pass and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Balmer grounded out to the pitcher, however, the groundout moved Chevalier to third base. Corynn Miner walked to bring the tying run to the plate. Maddie Farrell laced a line-drive into center field to record the first hit of the game. Additionally, Farrell's RBI single put the Spartans on the board. || NC 3, UT 1
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Corynn Miner made her second start of the year for UT; the red-shirt junior received the loss in the decision, however, neither runs were earned by Newberry.
- Miner pitched a complete game and allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out six batters.
- Maddie Farrell logged the only hit of the game for Tampa, which drove in the lone run of the game.
- Lexie Chevalier reached base twice via free-pass and the sophomore scored on Farrell's RBI base-knock.
- Newberry's Selice Daley went a complete game and struck out seven; the senior right-hander allowed six walks and one hit.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- In 2019, the Spartans were held to one hit or less in only one game.
- Last season, UT lost two games in which they allowed zero earned runs.
- Dating back to 2018, the Spartans own a 36-14 record at Naimoli Family Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST | Paige Meyer led off for Newberry with an infield single. Meyer moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, Haley Simonds drove a line-drive to right field and Lexie Chevalier came up throwing to first base. Simonds was safe at first base, therefore, Meyer was able to score from second base. || NC 1, UT 0
TOP 6TH | The Spartans committed two errors to begin the inning which gave the Wolves two baserunners in the sixth. After a groundout, Kylee Barry pinch hit for Newberry and drove in a run with a fielders choice. Barry stole second which provided NC with two runners in scoring position. Reagan Glanz pitch-hit for Newberry and spilt the gap with a two-RBI double into left-center field. || NC 4, UT 0
BOT 6TH | Trailing by four runs, Corynn Miner walked to begin the inning. The starting pitcher, Mariah Galhouse, followed up with a single to left field. The base-knock was Galhouse's third hit of the game. Maddie Farrell reached base on a fielders choice and was pinch-ran for by Mackenzie Allen. Allen stole second and provided UT with two runners in scoring position. Bailey Phillips scorched a liner off the pitcher and the Wolves recorded the out after the deflection. However, the Spartans were able to sneak a run across during the play. || NC 4, UT 1
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Mariah Galhouse started in the circle for game two and the right-hander went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.
- Galhouse, a freshman from Spring Hill, Fla., helped the cause with a career-high three hits. The Springstead HS graduate has racked up five hits in nine at-bats.
- Sam Kaye came into relief in the seventh inning and sent down the side on ten pitches.
- Lexie Chevalier reached base twice on two walks; the sophomore has totaled six walks in four games.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Spartans dual-threat, Corynn Miner, finished the weekend with four hits in 12 at-bats, three RBI, two walks and allowed zero earned runs in 12 innings pitched.
- Tampa left the bases-loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. In game two, UT totaled 9 runners left-on-base.
- Dating back to 2018, the Spartans own a 37-15 record at Naimoli Family Softball Field.
UP NEXT: UT will head to St. Augustine, Fla. for on Friday, February 7 for the Old Coast Classic, a three-day invitational. The Spartans face off against No. 24 Valdosta State, Flagler, and Wingate this weekend.
