
Mars Hill rallies for split on road versus Warriors
The Mars Hill softball team (2-3) split on the road versus Southern Wesleyan (2-2) Wednesday evening, falling in game one by a score of 8-0, but rebounding to win game two, 7-5.
CENTRAL, S.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (2-3) split on the road versus Southern Wesleyan (2-2) Wednesday evening, falling in game one by a score of 8-0, but rebounding to win game two, 7-5.
GAME ONE: SWU 8, MHU 0
The Warriors blanked Mars Hill in the first game of their doubleheader, using two big innings to their advantage.
In the third inning, Delaney Byers opened the scoring with a RBI double to score Emma Collins. Savannah Huff plated Byers with a RBI single to right field and later crossed home off of a Lydia Clanton RBI single.
The Warriors plated five in the sixth inning highlighted by Huff's three-run double to end the contest.
Danielle Harris led the Lions with two hits in the contest.
Delanie Laudenbacher picked up her second win of the season, striking out six and allowing six hits. Marissa Adame allowed eight runs on six hits while striking out seven.
GAME TWO: MHU 7, SWU 5
Mars Hill used a five-run fourth inning to earn the split, taking game two by a score of 7-5.
Trailing 4-3 after Kenley Powell's RBI single, Ashley Hamlin put the Lions up by one with a two-run triple, scoring Powell and Miranda Marks. Maggie Langheim tacked on two more runs with a single up the middle, plating Hamlin and Alexis Nix.
Savannah Huff cut the deficit to two with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lions were able to maintain the lead and come away with their second win of the season.
Huff opened the scoring with a RBI single to left field, plating Delaney Byers.
In the third inning, the Lions scored twice, highlighted by Danielle Harris' RBI double that scored Hamlin. The Warriors responded in the bottom half of the frame as Megan New cleared the bases with a three-run double to left center.
Hamlin went 4-for-4 from the plate and was a home run shy of the cycle. She drove in two and scored twice. Peyton Duba added two hits while Langheim picked up two RBI. New went 3-for-4 and led the Warriors with three RBI.
Kayla Gallagher earned her first win as a Lion, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out five in seven innings. Emma Collins suffered the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in three innings pitched.
The Lions travel to Converse on Saturday, February 20 to take on the Valkyries. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
