
Seniors recognized in penultimate games versus UVA Wise

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (12-23, 3-19 SAC) was swept on Saturday versus UVA Wise (16-17, 11-11 SAC) by scores of 4-2 and 11-3, respectively.
GAME ONE: UVAW 4, MHU 2
The Cavaliers scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind and take game one.
With runners on second and third, a costly Mars Hill error allowed both Kailey Huffman and Casey Chambers to score, tying the game at two. Kaylee Jones put UVA Wise ahead with a two-run home run to deep center field.
Raychel Lapallo earned the complete game victory, collecting her third strikeout of the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Maggie Langheim plated both Ashley Evans and Paige Jeffries to put the Lions up 2-0 with a RBI into left field.
The trio of Evans, Danielle Harris, and Brookelynn Nanney led the Lions with two hits apiece. Ashley Collins got the start, striking out two and allowing no hits in two innings.
Marissa Adame, in relief, threw 4.2 innings, striking out 13 including the first six batters she faced.
GAME TWO: UVAW 11, MHU 3 (6 Innings)
UVA Wise used a five-run fourth inning to lead them to the game two win in six innings.
With the bases loaded, a Mars Hill error allowed McKenna Falwell to reach first and plate Kaylee Jones. A hard hit ball up the middle off the Lions' pitched allowed the Cavaliers to go up 2-0. Kara Long cleared the bases with a three-run double to left center, extending their lead to five.
Maggie Langheim drove in her first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single to right center field.
Sarah Barrett, in the top of the fifth, hit a three-run home run to put the Cavaliers up by seven. Alexis Miles mirrored Barrett in the top of the sixth with a three-run home run of her own.
Langheim, in the bottom of the sixth, hit a two-run home run for the Lions to cut the deficit to eight.
Barrett led all players with four RBI. Miles led all players with three hits and, along with Long, posted three RBI apiece. Langheim led the Lions' offense with two hits and three RBI.
Falwell earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out eight.
Prior to the start of game one, seniors Brookelynn Nanney, Ashley Hamlin, Ashley Collins, Danielle Harris, and Ashley Evans were recognized and celebrated for their contributions to the program.
The Lions conclude the 2021 season on Monday versus Coker. First pitch at home is set for 1 p.m.
