
Lions sweep Winston-Salem State in non-conference play
The Mars Hill volleyball team (10-7) defeated Winston-Salem State (9-14) in straight sets (25-14, 25-21, 28-26) Saturday afternoon inside Chambers Gymnasium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (10-7) defeated Winston-Salem State (9-14) in straight sets (25-14, 25-21, 28-26) Saturday afternoon inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Lions hit a match-high .325 in the first set, cruising through to take the opening frame. Mars Hill posted 17 kills on 40 attempts.
In the second, Mars Hill hit .102, however, recorded another 17 kills. The Lions closed out the frame on a 4-2 run to go up 2-0.
Winston-Salem hit a team-high .156 in the third, fending off four match points, but the Lions' overwhelming offense took over late and closed out the match in three.
Ioana Poenaru led all players with 12 kills and added six digs. Nikkayla Stewart recorded 10 kills followed by nine from Timmons Yates. Jordan Schmucker posted 31 assists and 21 digs for the double-double while adding five kills. Laela Jimenez also recorded a double-double, leading all players with 28 digs and 12 assists.
Mars Hill takes on Anderson in a return to South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday, October 24 on the road. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
