Cavalier fight can’t break the sweep

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman (6-7, 4-1) displays resilience and strength over UVA-Wise (5-4, 0-3) to complete their eighth straight win over the Cavaliers.

After dropping a match to Limestone the night before, the Eagles stayed on the road for their final match of the week, gathering another sweep for the record books.

"We knew we needed to bounce back after our loss on Tuesday. I'm excited to see the competitiveness in our athletes during our match." head coach Ashley Tiernan said. "We know we are capable and need to clean up our small game in order to continue to grow."

Julia Wheeler and Taylor Adams both found themselves with double-digit kills by the end of the night. Freshman Blair Cherry provided the majority of assists, collecting 34 on the match and Carlee Allbaugh led in the defense with a season high of 18 saves. Skylor Weaver and Emmagrace Cobb both garnered three block assists, half of the teams six total rejections.

Wise did not go down uncontested however, delivering 47 kills to C-N's 46, rejecting eight balls and not allowing any set to be taken by more than three points.

Set 1 (28-26)

After 5 ties and a pair of lead changes in the first half of the set, Wise gained a head on C-N at 11-14. Four Cavalier errors and a Wheeler ace later, Carson-Newman rearranged the score and took control with 16-14. Tied back up at 16-16, the contest falls back and forth, point-by-point in a race to the endline. After the final draw at 26-26, Taylor Adams tallies a pair of kills to clinch the overtime victory 28-26.

Set one proved to be the tightest set played this season with 14 total score ties and five lead changes. Only one other time in 2023 has Carson-Newman seen one singular set reach more than 10 ties, against North Greenville on Sept. 8.

Set 2 (25-22)

Tight yet again, set two held nine ties and six lead trades between the Eagles and Cavaliers. A kill from Julia Wheeler set C-N in front at 18-17 after which they preserved their lead to the finish, clinched by a service ace from Carlee Allbaugh.

Set 3 (25-23)

Carson-Newman started off with a strong pace, grabbing a seven point margin over Wise at 14-7. In contrast to the prior sets, the third held no ties nor lead swaps, the Cavaliers could not close in. Though a four point run at the end of the set shrunk Wise's deficit to only one point at 23-22, kills from Taylor Adams and Emmagrace Cobb sealed the set and the match, Carson-Newman taking their eighth straight victory over the Cavaliers.

Carson-Newman rests for the remainder of the week, preparing for action against Catawba next Tuesday and Mars Hill at home on Friday, Sept. 29.
