The Mars Hill softball team (15-27, 4-16 SAC) was swept by Anderson (30-14, 19-3 SAC) by scores of 11-9 and 9-1 Thursday afternoon at home.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill softball team (15-27, 4-16 SAC) was swept by Anderson (30-14, 19-3 SAC) by scores of 11-9 and 9-1 Thursday afternoon at home.
GAME ONE: AU 11, MHU 9
A six-run sixth inning for the Trojans pushed them past the Lions in game one.
A two-run double by Maddie Carpenter, trailing 6-5 at the time, put the Trojans ahead. Following a costly error that plated another run, Paige Vickery hit a two-run home run to put Anderson up 10-6. Another Mars Hill error allowed the sixth run of the inning to cross.
The Lions fought back in the sixth and seventh with Miranda Marks hitting a two-run home run in the sixth, followed by Jessica Senn's solo shot in the bottom of the final inning to pull within two.
Anderson opened the scoring in the top of the first, but in the bottom of the frame, the first of Leah Grimes' two two-run home runs put the Lions up 2-1.
The Trojans went up 4-2 after the third, highlighted by Hannah Whitaker's two-run home run. Grimes responded with her second two-run home run of the day in the bottom of the frame.
Mars Hill scored twice in the bottom of the fifth after conceding a run to go up 6-5 heading into the sixth.
Grimes and Senn led the Lions with three hits apiece while Grimes led all players with four RBI. Senn and Marks added two RBI apiece.
GAME TWO: AU 9, MHU 1 – 5 Innings
The Lions were held to just two hits in their game two defeat at the hands of the Trojans.
The Lions trailed 2-0 entering the fourth before the Trojans began to pull away. Lulu Luedtkey doubled the Anderson lead with a two-run home run in the top of the frame. Carson Hobbs added a RBI single to go up five.
Back-to-back solo home runs from Paige Vickery and Ava Worth kicked off the four-run fifth inning that saw Anderson go up 9-0.
Jessica Senn hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to break the shutout bid.
Senn and Payton Little rcorded the two Lions' hits of the contest. Hobbs led all players with three hits while Luedtke led all players with three RBI.
Mars Hill takes on UVA Wise on Saturday, April 20 in their final road contests of the 2024 campaign. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
