
Lions sweep Newberry on Senior Day
The Mars Hill volleyball team (14-11, 8-10 SAC) defeated Newberry (7-20, 5-13 SAC) in straight sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) Saturday evening.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (14-11, 8-10 SAC) defeated Newberry (7-20, 5-13 SAC) in straight sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) Saturday evening.
Mars Hill hit .195 in the first set, knocking down 15 kills on 41 attempts. Newberry had fought off several set points, but a service error provided the Lions the 1-0 advantage heading into the second.
The Lions hit a match-high .366 in the second with a match-high 18 kills on 41 attempts. They held Newberry to a .089 hitting percentage.
In the third, Jada Cannon's 10th kill of the match ended the contest, giving the Lions their 14th win of the season. The Lions hit .119, holding Newberry to a match-low .048 hitting percentage.
Mars Hill hit .226 as a team over the three sets. Cannon led the Lions with 10 kills, adding 10 digs for the double-double, followed by nine from Katilyn Grant. Laela Jimenez led the Lions with 12 digs. Jordan Schmucker recorded the double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs, adding six kills.
Prior to the first serve of the match, seniors Kaitlyn Gregory and Jordan Schmucker were recognized for their contributions to the program.
The Lions qualified for the South Atlantic Conference tournament for the sixth season in a row, securing the eighth seed. They will face Wingate on Monday, November 13 on the road. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
