HOW IT HAPPENED

Innings 1-3

Wingate, who rallied for a 9-6 win in the late innings against Saints a week ago, wasted little time jumping out to a lead as the home team tallied four runs in the bottom of the first. Limestone had some early scoring opportunities over the first three frames, but would leave four men stranded in the early going.

Innings 4-6

With two outs in the top of the third, sophomore Kyle Strovink (Rocky Point, N.Y.) worked a five-pitch walk before Etheridge followed with a single through the right side of the infield. Painton then put the Saints on the board with a big two-out knock, lacing a two-run double into the rightfield gap to cut the margin to 4-2.

The Bulldogs got both of those runs back in the bottom of the frame, however, as a two-run homerun pushed the advantage back to four. Limestone trimmed the lead to 6-3 on back-to-back doubles by Garick and Banks in the sixth, but Wingate would open up a six-run cushion in the home half.

Innings 7-9

Sending 10 men to the dish in the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs put the game well out of reach as they put up a five-spot in the frame to extend the advantage to 14-3. Allen blasted his 17th homerun of the season in the ninth – a three-run shot – but it was not quite enough to overcome the large deficit.

TURNING POINT

Wingate surged ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the first and would not look back from there, eventually opening up an 11-run lead in the eighth inning.
