Johnson ties school record in SAC Quarterfinal versus Carson-Newman
The No. 5 seed Mars Hill volleyball team (15-15) was swept by No. 4 seed Carson-Newman (23-7) Tuesday night in South Atlantic Conference quarterfinal action.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The No. 5 seed Mars Hill volleyball team (15-15) was swept by No. 4 seed Carson-Newman (23-7) Tuesday night in South Atlantic Conference quarterfinal action.
Senior middle hitter Sally Anne Johnson had a team-high eight kills and recorded two blocks, tying Kelly Sampson for the Mars Hill record with 382 career blocks.
Opening the contest with an ace from Lauren Phillips, the Lions gave up eight of the following nine points, falling behind 8-2. Mars Hill trailed 11-4 before reeling off seven of the next nine points to trail by two. The Lions continued to claw back into the set, eventually taking the 16-15 lead following back-to-back attack errors from the Eagles.
A late run by Carson-Newman gave the Eagles a 23-18 lead before closing out the set, 25-21 to claim the opening frame.
Carson-Newman never trailed in the second set, taking advantage of two separate 3-0 runs. The Lions pulled within one, 18-17, following back-to-back aces from Jordan Schmucker late in the stanza. The Eagles responded by taking the next four points and closed out the frame with kills from Megan Oldenburger and Katie Parnell.
The Eagles opened and closed the final frame on 4-0 runs, advancing them to the semifinals. In the set, Carson-Newman hit .469 with 15 kills on 32 attempts with no attack errors.
Sarah Goddard recorded five kills and nine digs on the night. Grace Lilly added four kills followed by Phillips three. Sara Pasour led the team with 11 assists and added one kill. Ully Martins paced the defense with 11 digs.
The Lions end the 2019 season with a 15-15 record.
