Volleyball Drops Four-Set Midweek Matchup at Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Catawba College volleyball team travelled to Newberry College for a South Atlantic Conference matchup on Tuesday night and fell in four sets 25-12, 25-14, 22-25, 25-23.
Catawba dropped the first two sets before taking set three 25-22. The Lady Indians took advantage eight Newberry errors in the third set and had 11 kills. Ashley Johnson and Kelcie Love each recorded three kills and Kary Hales had four servivce aces to help Catawba win the set.
The Wolves closed things out in the fourth set despite Catawba leading 12-8 midway through. The turning point came when Catawba led 13-9, and Newberry countered with a momentum-shifting 8-2 run to move in front 17-15. That lead remained until the Wolves were in front 21-17, and Catawba fought back with one last spurt. The Lady Indians clapped back with a 6-1 run to take a late 23-22 lead. Newberry scored the final three points to close out the game, 25-23.
Ashley Johnson and Rachel Gonzales each had nine kills. Kary Hales had 17 digs and four services aces, and Dara Kane had 27 assists.
The women's volleyball team has three more games this week beginning with a rescheduled conference matchup at home this Thursday against Lincoln Memorial.
