Fladung Breaks Single-Game Saves Record in 15-14 Win Over St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C. – The Coker University women's lacrosse team won its first game of the season against St. Andrews 15-14 on Sunday (Feb. 21). Junior goalkeeper Olivia Fladung also broke the program's single-game saves record in the victory.

The Cobras trailed 1-0 in the first five minutes of the game until Meagan Gallagher flipped in a goal to tie the game. Gallagher and Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole scored less than two minutes apart to take a 3-1 lead. St. Andrews later tied the game at 4-4 with 14:19 left in the first half. Hannah Shuren and Gallagher teamed up and responded with three straight goals to extend Coker's lead 7-4. The Cobras would take a 7-6 lead at halftime.

Within five minutes of the second half, the Knights tied the game again at 7-7.  Coker rattled off three straight goals to go ahead 10-7, before the Knights would score two straight to get back within one with 19 minutes to play. Another three-goal run for the Cobras put Coker ahead 13-9 with 16 minutes to play, before the Knights would rally back to eventually tie the game at 14 with five minutes left. Hannah Shuren scored an unassisted goal with 3:39 to play to put the Cobras ahead for good.

Gallagher and Shuren each scored five goals to lead the Cobras, while Gabby Jessup also netted a hat trick in the win. Alexis Zegan and Baronella-O'Toole also each added one goal in the game. Jessup dished out four assists in the game, while Shuren also helped on three Coker goals in the game and Zegan added two assists. Mackenzie Stroup picked up a team-high seven ground balls in the game, while Amariah Lawson and Zegan each scooped up five. Seven other Cobras recorded at least one ground ball in the game. Fladung registered the lone caused turnover in the game for Coker. Fladung's 21 saves are both a career-high and a new single-game Coker record, passing the 18-save mark that Cassie Williams set back on Mar. 28, 2018 against Catawba.
