
MHU wins home opener versus Erskine
Five Lions scored in double-figures in their home-opening win over the Flying Fleet.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (2-0) defeated Erskine (1-4) in their home opener Monday night by a score of 81-69 inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Lions trailed 41-37 after the opening 20 minutes. Erskine hit nearly 54 percent of their shots from the floor and went 9-of-18 from beyond the arc. Grant Lovette led the team with 13 points.
A balanced scoring attack from Mars Hill saw Kory Davis led the way with nine followed by Dinari Boykin's six off the bench.
Mars Hill flipped the script in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the floor as Kadyn Dawkins and Daniel Mayfield paced the offense with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Blair Crutcher was dominant defensively, pulling down seven rebounds to tie Mayfield for the team lead in the final 20 minutes of play.
Lovette led all players with 22 points while Christian Monroe added 15 for the Flying Fleet.
Five Lions totaled in double-figures, led by Dawkins' 17 on the night. Both Boykin and Davis netted 15, followed by 13 from Mayfield and 11 from Kendall Davis. Crutcher led all players with 12 rebounds and Dawkins led Mars Hill with five assists and four steals.
The Lions open South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday, November 20 when they host Limestone. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
