
Women’s Volleyball falls just short in five-set loss at Mars Hill
Mars Hill, N.C. —- Catawba College Women's Volleyball and Mars Hill mirrored scores over the first four sets Tuesday night, before the Lions took the decisive fifth set in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba had 64 kills to Mars Hill's 63
- The Lions hit .160 to the Catawba Indians' .133
- MHU recorded a slight edge in assists 61-60
- Catawba had five service aces to Mars Hill's three
- The Lions had 106 digs to Catawba's 105, while also winning the advantage in blocks 10-8
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Jordan Danielson hit .293, tying a game-high with 16 kills
- Mailie Chretien contributed 16 kills along with 24 digs
- Katrina Misra was the third Catawba player to record 16 kills
- Siena Roethler piled up a career-high 49 assists
- Riley Hill and Kary Hales had 28 and 26 digs, respectively
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- MHU won the first point, but Catawba scored five straight, capped by back-to-back Jordan Danielson kills, forcing the Lions to take an early timeout, as Catawba led 5-1
- The teams traded runs, as Catawba led as much as 15-9 after a Chloe Danielson kill, but Mars Hill fought back with three points of their own
- Catawba once again led 19-14 before three straight Lions kills cut their deficit to two and forced a Catawba timeout
- MHU kept the momentum going, scoring three more points to take a 20-19 lead and pushing Catawba to take another timeout
- Tied at 23-23, Chloe Danielson's kill and a Lion attack error gave the close set to the visitors
SECOND SET
- Mars Hill scored the first three points of the second set, but Catawba righted the ship, as the two were once again in a close battle
- Catawba rattled off four straight points to take a 12-9 lead and force an MHU timeout
- Back-to-back Mars Hill kills gave the Lions a 22-20 timeout and Catawba took a timeout
- Catawba fought off set point twice, but came just short, as MHU took set two, 25-23
THIRD SET
- Hales led the set off with an ace, but three early kills from the Lions forced an early Catawba timeout as MHU led 7-5
- The lead grew to as much as 16-10 for the Lions
- Catawba once again clawed back, winning six of nine points to cut their deficit to 20-18
- MHU distanced itself before kills from Misra surrounded a Jordan Danielson kill to get Catawba right back to 24-22
- The Lions took the set on a service error, 25-22
FOURTH SET
- Mars Hill once again led the set with three straight points
- Catawba rattled back with eight straight points, half of which came from kills from the Danielson sisters, as MHU called an early timeout
- Catawba largely controlled the early going, leading 15-7 over halfway through
- The Catawba Indians held a 21-15 lead before seven straight Lion points gave the home team its first lead in the set since 3-2
- Lauren Patrick's kill tied the set before Chloe Danielson closed Catawba's four straight points to force a decisive fifth set
FIFTH SET
- The teams traded points over the first eight rallies
- MHU scored on six of eight points to take a 10-6 lead
- Nikkayla Stewart's kill forced Catawba's second timeout, as the Lions led 12-8
- The teams traded points the rest of the way, as Jada Cannon's kill ended the match for Mars Hill
