
Mars Hill rallies, downs Catawba in five sets
The Mars Hill volleyball team (8-4, 4-3 SAC) defeated Catawba (5-7, 3-5 SAC) in five sets (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11) Tuesday evening inside Chambers Gymnasium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (8-4, 4-3 SAC) defeated Catawba (5-7, 3-5 SAC) in five sets (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11) Tuesday evening inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Lions hit a game-high .320 in the fifth set, recording 10 kills on 25 attempts. Jada Cannon's 16th kill of the night proved to be the game-winning swing.
Catawba jumped out to a large lead in the first and despite a late Mars Hill rally, was able to hold on to the first set. They hit .171 with 15 kills in the frame. Mars Hill responded in the second with 13 kills, evening up the contest at one set apiece.
The Lions took the 2-1 edge after recording a game-high 16 kills in the third, hitting .213 in the frame. Mirroring their first set, Catawba jumped out to a 9-3 lead and held on for a majority of the set before a 7-0 Mars Hill run gave the Lions a 21-20 lead. Catawba ended the frame on a 4-0 run to force a fifth.
The trio of Jordan Danielson, Katrina Misra, and Mailie Chretien recorded a game-high 16 kills. Chretien added 24 digs for the double-double.
Cannon led the Lions with 16 kills and added 22 digs for the double-double. Nikkayla Stewart added 12 kills and hit a game-high .476. Timmons Yates posted 11 kills and five blocks. Emma Vacha led all players with six blocks.
Jordan Schmucker collected 46 assists while Laela Jimenez recorded a game-high 38 digs.
The Lions take on Emory & Henry Friday, October 6 at 7 p.m. on the road.
